How we publish

How to cite this page
PollsAfrica, South Africa public finance data, pollsafrica.com/data/south-africa-public-finance. Original source: the National Treasury or Municipal Money table named beside each figure.
What the figures are
Amounts are published as printed, in nominal rand. National years show the revised estimate and the last year is a budget. Municipal figures are audited outcomes from Municipal Money. We rank by the number shown and use no best or worst language.
How we check them
National and provincial tables must add to their printed totals, and the nine provinces must add to the printed national figure. Municipal items are checked against their own totals. A figure that fails a check is not shown, and blank cells are never shown as zero.
Gaps we know about
Municipal operating totals exist only from 2022/23, so earlier years show items without totals. Equitable share figures for 2026/27 are from the bill as tabled, and the Act may differ. Provincial GDP and the 2022 census population by province are still being collected, and spending by function is held only from 2022/23.
Sources and reuse
Every figure names its source. We publish figures and link to the original, and we do not host copies of the source documents. Municipal Money data is reused with the source credited.
