Household survey

Find out how households live, spend, travel, pay and cope, with a method note you can defend.

A household survey asks people about their home, their income and spending, the services they use and the problems they face. Clients use them to size a market, plan a programme, check a policy or understand a customer before spending money. We start with the question you need answered and work backwards to the shortest questionnaire and the cheapest honest way to reach the right people.

Who it is for

  • Companies sizing demand or pricing for households.
  • Agencies and NGOs that need a quick read before a larger baseline.
  • Public bodies and researchers who need a clear, documented method.

What we do

  • Turn your question into a short questionnaire, tested with members of our Voices group before it goes out.
  • Reach people through our panel by SMS, WhatsApp, Telegram and mobile web, with phone interviews and field partners for depth and coverage.
  • Set quotas on age, sex and region, then weight the results and say plainly what the weighting can and cannot fix.
  • Check quality as the data arrives: duplicates, speeding and straight-lining are held out and counted.

What you get

  • Topline results and charts with the exact question wording.
  • A method note: who was asked, how, when, the sample and the weights.
  • The data file with a codebook, on request.
  • A live study room where you follow fieldwork as it happens.

What decides the price

We do not publish list prices, because studies of the same size can be very different jobs. These are the things that move a quote:

  • Who you need to hear from and where they live.
  • Number of countries and languages.
  • Questionnaire length and open-ended questions.
  • Sample size and how precise the answer must be.

Try the scoping tool to see which of these matter most for your study, or see how pulse studies, trackers and full studies work.

Where we work

Ghana, Kenya, Ethiopia and South Africa. Nigerian studies are run with our Nigeria arm, NigeriaPolls, using the same method.

Frequently asked questions

How reliable are the results?

We set quotas on age, sex and region, weight to national figures, check quality as the data arrives, and publish the questions, the sample and the method with every result, following the AAPOR and WAPOR codes.

Can you survey households with no smartphone?

Yes. We reach them by SMS and phone interviews, and our field partners carry out face-to-face interviews wherever a study needs them.

How long does a household survey take?

A pulse study is quick, because the questionnaire is short and the panel is ready. Full studies take longer. You get the timeline with the quote.
