Surveys you can commission in a week, studies you can defend in a boardroom
Pulse studies, trackers and full studies across Africa, for companies, agencies, development partners and public bodies.
PollsAfrica designs, runs and reports surveys across Africa. We start where your question is small. Most clients begin with a pulse study, then add a tracker or a full study when the first answer shows it is worth it. Every study is scoped to your audience, so you get a fixed price for an agreed scope, and the price arrives within one working day of your question.
Choose your first study
Pulse study
One country and a short questionnaire answered by hundreds of people from our panel, weighted to national age, sex and region. You get the topline, charts, the exact question wording and a method note in about two weeks, and the data file on request. Good for a quick read on a brand, a price, a product or a public question.
How it is scoped: audience, country, length of questionnaire and sample size.
Tracker
The same pulse repeated every quarter, so you see change instead of a single picture. One country or several, with a short dashboard after each wave.
How it is scoped: countries, waves per year and the size of each wave.
Full study
Questionnaire design and testing with our Voices group, more than a thousand completed interviews, mixed mode with phone follow-up where needed, full weighting, a report and a presentation. Multi-country studies are quoted together.
How it is scoped: audience, countries, languages, mode and reporting.
Add-ons
Voices group discussions or interviews, local-language translation and back-translation, phone follow-up interviews for hard-to-reach groups, and a data file with codebook and methods appendix.
Development partners and public bodies
Baselines, endlines, evaluations and third-party monitoring are quoted from your terms of reference. See our work for development partners.
Follow your study live
Every study comes with a private study room. You sign in with your own account and watch the fieldwork as it happens:
- completed interviews against your target, and how many came in each day;
- how the sample is filling, by region, age and area, with the same views in every country we work in;
- how invitations turn into interviews on each channel;
- our quality checks, including how many interviews were held out and why;
- every stage of the project, from design and pilot to analysis and report, with dates.
The figures refresh every 15 minutes. You see totals and shares only, never anyone’s phone number or personal details. The headline results appear only after our expert has signed them off, so you are never handed half-finished numbers. Access is set up per study, so one client never sees another’s work.
What drives the cost
Studies with the same number of interviews can be very different jobs. These are the things that move a price:
- Who you want to hear from. The general public on their phones is the simplest. Customers of one company, small business owners, farmers or company decision-makers take more effort to find.
- Countries and languages. Each extra country and each extra language adds translation, testing and checking.
- The length and difficulty of the questionnaire, including open-ended questions that need coding.
- How we collect: panel messaging, phone follow-up, or interviewers on the ground.
- Sample size, and how precise you need the result to be.
- What you want back: a topline and charts, a full report, a presentation, the data file, a dashboard.
First-clients pilot
We are building our list of named references, so The first five clients who let us publish an anonymised case study get a reduced pilot price on their first study. You approve the case study text before it is published. Ask for the pilot price when you send your question.
Where we run studies
Nigeria
Run with our Nigeria arm, NigeriaPolls, using the same method and wording. NigeriaPolls services
Ghana
Panel studies by SMS, WhatsApp, Telegram and mobile web.
Kenya
Panel studies by SMS, WhatsApp, Telegram and mobile web.
Ethiopia
Panel studies, with phone follow-up where the panel needs it.
South Africa
Panel studies by WhatsApp, SMS and mobile web.
Ask for the current panel size in your country. Other countries are quoted on request, usually through a field partner.
How we reduce your risk
- A named university expert from the country reviews the design and signs off every study.
- We follow the AAPOR and WAPOR codes of ethics. Every result states who was asked, how, when and the exact questions (see our standards and credentials).
- A fixed price for the agreed scope, before we start.
- A live study room, so you can watch the fieldwork instead of waiting for a report.
- We say plainly what a panel can and cannot tell you. We never call an opt-in panel nationally representative.
What we need from you
A short paragraph with your question, the country, the audience and the date you need the answer. We reply within one working day with a recommended design, a price and a timeline. Use the contact form or email research@pollsafrica.com.
Frequently asked questions
Can a small company really commission a study from you?
Yes. Most first studies are pulse studies, because a small question deserves a small, fast answer. Many clients add a tracker or a full study once the first result shows the question is worth following.
How much does a study cost?
It depends on who we need to reach, in which countries and languages, how long the questionnaire is and what you want delivered. We give you a fixed price for an agreed scope within one working day of receiving your question, and we explain what drives it.
Why don't you publish prices?
Because studies with the same number of interviews can be very different jobs. A general-public pulse on phones and a study of company decision-makers in two languages should not cost the same, and a single list price would be wrong for most clients. We tell you the price for yours quickly instead.
Can I see the results as the data comes in?
You can see the progress of the fieldwork live in your study room: completes, quotas, quality checks and the project timeline. The headline answers appear after our expert signs them off. Early results from a half-filled sample can point the wrong way, so we hold them back until the sample is complete and checked.
Is a panel sample nationally representative?
No, and we do not call it that. Our panel is opt-in, so it leans urban, younger and more educated than the whole population. We weight to national age, sex and region, show the credibility interval, and state these limits on every result.
How big is your panel in my country?
We tell you the number of active, verified panel members in your country when you ask, and every result states the exact sample it is based on. Panels grow every week, so we give you the live figure and do not print one that goes out of date.
What do you need from me to start?
A short paragraph with your question, the country, the audience and the date you need the answer.
What is the first-clients pilot?
The first five clients who agree to let us publish an anonymised case study get a reduced pilot price on their first study. You approve the case study text before it is published.
Do you do political or party work?
No. We are non-partisan and do no work for parties or candidates.
