Method and sources

The map and the dependence ranking use World Bank resource rents: the value of oil, gas, coal, minerals and timber extracted, minus the cost of extracting them, as a share of GDP. World mineral shares are from the U.S. Geological Survey Mineral Commodity Summaries and count only the African producers USGS names, so the true African share can be a little higher. Oil, gas and coal output are from the U.S. Energy Information Administration; oil and gas reserves are EIA figures republished by Our World in Data. Export shares are from UN Comtrade. Nothing is estimated by us. Figures last checked on 24 October 2026.

Frequently asked questions

What are the main natural resources in Africa?

Africa's natural resources include oil, natural gas, tantalum, platinum, cobalt, manganese, chromium, zirconium, vermiculite and palladium and timber, spread unevenly across 54 countries. African countries produced 85.3% of the world's tantalum, 81.2% of the world's platinum (platinum), 75.5% of the world's cobalt and 74.8% of the world's manganese in 2025, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The largest oil producers were Nigeria, Libya and Algeria, and Libya holds the largest proved oil reserves, 48.4 billion barrels. Natural resources matter most to Libya (61% of GDP), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (38.8% of GDP) and Congo (37.7% of GDP).

Which minerals does Africa produce most of?

tantalum (85.3% of world output, led by Democratic Republic of the Congo), platinum (platinum) (81.2% of world output, led by South Africa), cobalt (75.5% of world output, led by Democratic Republic of the Congo), manganese (74.8% of world output, led by South Africa), chromium (49% of world output, led by South Africa) and zirconium (45.9% of world output, led by South Africa), in 2025.

Which African country produces the most oil?

Nigeria, about 1,605,414 barrels a day in 2025, followed by Libya, Algeria and Angola.

Which African country has the largest oil reserves?

Libya, with 48.4 billion barrels of proved reserves (2021), followed by Nigeria and Algeria.

Which African country has the most natural gas?

Nigeria has the largest proved gas reserves, 5.8 trillion cubic metres. Algeria produces the most, 98.8 billion cubic metres in 2024.

Which African countries depend most on natural resources?

By resource rents as a share of GDP: Libya (61%), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (38.8%), Congo (37.7%), Zambia (35.3%) and Angola (30%).
