How to read this ranking
- Area figures change very little from year to year. Small changes come from new surveys and from how lakes and coastal waters are counted.
- Total area includes lakes and rivers. Land area leaves them out, which matters for countries with large lakes such as Uganda, Tanzania and Malawi.
- Western Sahara is not listed as a separate country. We follow the World Bank, which publishes figures for the 54 African member states of the United Nations.
Method and sources
Area is the World Bank's figure for total surface area, which includes lakes and rivers, from the Food and Agriculture Organization. We show land area alongside it. Population is the IMF's figure used across our economy rankings. We checked the figures at the source on 24 October 2026.
